2019 SA Murray Grey Breed Promotion Group January Weekend

January 18th, 19th & 20th

A write up by Glenda Grady, Grovene Murray Greys

For our January meeting we started with a visit to Scott Lacks dairy. Scott was happy to show us around and answer any questions we had.His operation is well run and employs local people to milk.

Tea was pizzas handmade by the Fabris family they were amazing. We were invited to look at the stock which was for sale in March.
Up early Saturday morning to visit the Naracoorte caves and the Wood gallery, our guide Andrew has worked at the caves for a long time and gave everyone an informative talk.
The wood gallery showed how talented people are.

Our BBQ lunch was at the Naracoorte lake with the men cooking BBQ and ladies supplying the salads.
Next stop was Keppoch produce ran by Brett and Leanne Dowling. This was an eye opener as it is such an excacting science to grow onions. You could see that Brett loved his job.
For afternoon tea we visited the Zilm garden, Deb has done an amazing job, her mum Peg Slape gave us an insight into how the garden has developed.
Dinner was at the Padthaway football club rooms with the Uniting Church catering for us. We all enjoyed the food, company and Jake Phillips explanation of Teys Modeling on meat. We had over 30 people enjoy the evening.

Thanks must go to the Padthaway Uniting church and the football club for their support.
Sunday was a fun day at Cocky lake with a speedboat available for fun activities. The big kids and little ones enjoyed the day.
AGM was held under the gum trees with all positions filled, and agenda discussed.
Lunch was a Weber Lamb roast supplied by JBS Bordertown. Thanks to Michael and Hannah for organising the kind donation.
After a fun filled week end our guests left to go home content that the group is well supported.
Thanks to Denise for spending a lot to time to organise the week end.
Best wishes to all as you exhibit cattle at the Royal Show.

A write up by Denise Fabris, Beeamma Murray Greys

Our Annual Murray Grey January weekend this year was held in the southeast in and around Bordertown to Naracoorte to Padthaway show casing different things in our area. We started on Friday 18th with a visit to a rotary dairy just south of Bordertown, where Scott Lack showed us how the cows come on to the rotary get milked and then back out and go through a feeder, then onto beeamma place for pizza tea, overlooking our big gum trees and setup. On Saturday 19th we started our day at the Naracoorte caves where 20 people went down the Alexander cave, which was a half an hour guided tour. Then over to the Yulgilbar wood Gallery, where people saw what David Williams hand makes with different woods mainly red gum, before heading to the swimming lake for a bbq lunch and sit and relax or a swim before the afternoon of activity. Around 2pm we headed off back towards Padthaway stopping at Keppock Produce the largest onion producers in the Southern hemisphere. Where Brett and Leanne Dolling showed us through their packing shed, a very  big operation. We saw one machine in action on how it grades the onions, packs them into boxes or bags depending where they are going. How they are stored etc. A very interesting time had by everyone how attended.

Then onto Deb Zilm’s Garden for afternoon tea and a wonder through a very spectator garden with creeks, dams and other interesting landscape ideas. Everyone got something out of it.

We then headed back to Padthaway for tea at the footy club rooms, where the church Ladies catered for us. A lovely meal and evening enjoyed by all who attended.

Jake Phillips came and did a talk to the group on what's happening at treys brothers it was a value based marketing and objective carcase measurements a very interesting topic.

Sunday we headed to Cocky Lake for the agm meeting with a weber lunch lamb and gravy rolls the lamb was donated by JBS Bordertown which was beautiful, mouth-watering lamb and cooked to perfection. The afternoon you could relax and enjoy the lake, or we were lucky enough to have a boat their which kids and adults could do some water sports. Steve had  a go at water skiing and still can for is age, and i think all kids either knee boarded or tubed behind the boat. A great weekend and great company enjoyed by all who attended.
